What is Caving?

This is an awesome trip for the curious scout, cave temperatures remain around 55 degrees Fahrenheit and the main passages are tall enough to walk through, with some narrow corridors and shallow ceilings. These caves also contain much smaller passages branching off and curving back around to the main corridor, so some who choose may have the opportunity to explore and experience crawling and wiggling through some tight places. The caves are safe for beginners and groups, providing an authentic and beautiful introduction to the life and landscape of the subterranean world.

What to expect?

  • Spend 3 – 4 hours inside the cave

  • Discuss cave formations (stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, calcium flows, streams, etc.) and cave life (bats, salamanders, etc.)

  • Explore cave passages with a headlamp, candle, or just your eyes (to get a taste of true darkness)!

  • Experience the nocturnal beauty of a natural cave. Compare the surroundings and experience with a commercial cave.

  • Discuss and use appropriate “leave no trace” etiquette to protect the fragile cave environment.

  • We will NOT be crawling through small crevices or trying to extend the known routes of the cave!
