Swim and Snorkel Test

  • To complete the Swim test (Bing Videos), you must demonstrate the following:

    • Jump feet-first into water deeper than your head, level off, and begin swimming.

    • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke,

    • breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl (no dog-paddle)

    • Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.

    • After completing the swim, rest by floating (Typically, for up to one minute).

    • (The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and include at least one sharp turn.)

  • We will have at least two swim checks in the Spring, and the official pre-trip swim test is in April

  • Everyone needs to pass the April test with ease at this point, or you will not be allowed to go on the trip

  • Sea Base will also conduct a swim and snorkel test immediately on our arrival in St. Thomas

    • Again, scouts will need to pass the BSA swim test with ease in open water in person in St. Thomas

  • They are strict about this because it is a safety issue

    • If a scout fails the swim test in St. Thomas, then a parent will be required to collect their scout and bring them home

  • Practicing and staying current with swimming is highly recommended throughout the Fall and Winter months, leading up to our prep meetings in the Spring.

  • Snorkel Test

    • The snorkel test at Sea Base for Scouts involves a series of requirements to ensure participants are well prepared for the underwater activities

    • Scouts must demonstrate the proper use of snorkeling equipment, including masks, fins, and snorkels, and learn to equalize pressure in the mask, ears, and sinus cavities

    • They must also demonstrate the use of swim fins and perform deepwater demonstrations, such as headfirst and feetfirst surface dives
