Summer 2024

Canoeing in Minnesota and Canada

We are planning to return to BSA's Northern Tier High Adventure Program at Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base, near Ely, MN in late June 2024. The flagship base of Northern Tier, the Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base has hosted Boy Scout canoe expeditions on the shores of Moose Lake since 1941. Located twenty miles outside of the town of Ely, MN, the Sommers Base outfits over 4,000 Scouts each year on wilderness canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota and the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Trips out of the Sommers base are limited to 8 total participants, per crew, plus an Interpreter (Northern Tier BSA Staff Adult Guide).  We were last there in the summer of 2020, during the COVID pandemic, and it's time to go again!

To learn more about Northern Tier, see the video below and visit the Northern Tier website: https://www.ntier.org/

Registration:

  • Registration will open on Thursday, 9/14/2023, via a link (button at bottom) on this web page.

  • An e-mail will go out to the entire Boy Troop announcing the link being active, in the early evening of 9/14/23.

  • Once that e-mail goes out, click on the link and register.

  • Selection will be based on the following criteria:

    • Youth will be prioritized by:

      • This trip is for Boy Troop 58 Scouts only (Girl troop 58 is attending BSA Sea Base the summer of 2024)

      • The youth is active in the current BT-58 program

      • Then, first come, first on the list, based on the time stamp of when you register

    • Adults will be prioritized by:

      • Uniformed adults currently registered in Scouting with BT/GT/Pack-58

      • Non-uniformed adults currently registered in Scouting (Committee members, Merit Badge Counselors)

      • Interested Other Parents

  • We'll do our best to accommodate everyone but understand we are limited to two crews of eight participants each (16 total participants = 4 adults and 12 youth). A wait list for Adults/Youth who are not part of the 16 slots, will be maintained, in the event we have openings OR if a third crew slot can be obtained.

  • A deposit of $400 will be due by October 3, 2023 after we have communicated the list of registered participants. Failure to pay the deposit on time will result in the participant forfeiting their slot to the next person on the waitlist.

Review the information below to learn more, there is a commitment, so be sure you are committed to everything below

Trip Overview

  • Age Requirement: By June 26, 2024 you must be 14 Years old or 13 and have completed 8th grade. There are no exceptions to this BSA mandated age requirement

  • Passport: Each participant MUST have a valid U.S. (or other nationality) passport that doesn't expire sooner than 6 months from when we arrive at Northern Tier (6/27/24). We are planning to take each crew into Canada, and a passport is a REQUIREMENT for entry into Canada and re-entry back into the US. If a single member of the crew does not have a valid passport, the entire crew will stay on the US-side in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (still a great trip!). U.S. Passports are taking 4-6 months to obtain right now, so if you need to obtain one, please get started NOW

  • Cost: Estimated to be $2500

    • Exact amount will be determined by the end of December 2024. This amount has been determined based on previous High Adventure trips. This amount could increase or decrease slightly.

    • This fee is based on the following:

      • Northern Tier Trek Fee (based on kevlar canoes, 8-day/7-night stay)

      • Ground Transportation (renting 15 passenger vans) and gas

      • Hotel accommodations to and from Ely, MN

      • Required Training

      • Crew Gear & Insignia

      • Brief tourist excursions during travel to Ely, MN

    • This fee DOES NOT include the following:

      • Costs to obtain a Passport

      • Souvenirs during the trip

      • Training trip incidentals on training weekends (mostly food, stove fuel, state park campground fees, and canoe rentals)

    • Scholarship money may be available for any youth participant with need. Please privately contact Mr. Densmore or Mr. Pilgrim if there is a need. We will make every effort to assist an otherwise qualified Scout...financial need should not be a limiting factor to attend this trip!

  • Trip Dates:

    • Depart Davidson morning of Tuesday, June 25, 2024

    • Arrive at Northern Tier Canoe Base on Thursday, June 27, 2024

    • Be on the water from Friday, June 28, 2024 through Wednesday, July 3, 2024

    • Depart Northern Tier on Thursday, July 4, 2024

    • Arrive Davidson evening of Friday, July 5, 2024

    • There will be monthly training meetings, starting on 11/2/23

    • There will be monthly day trips and/or a few weekend training trips, starting in February, leading up to the expedition.

  • Adult Leadership: We require 2 adults for each crew

    • Exact crew composition will be determined when we know attendance. If we don't fill all openings with youth, we will be able to accommodate additional adults, but after the first 4 mandatory adult slots are filled, all remaining openings go to available youth, first.

    • Minimum adults per crew is 2, maximum is 4, per BSA.

    • Adults will be required to undergo the same training/preparation activities as the youth to get ready for the trip…this is a rigorous high adventure activity and physical fitness and canoeing skills are necessary to participate.

    • Adults will be required to attend Wilderness First Aid and CPR/AED training in advance of the trip. This will be paid for and organized by the Troop, and will likely take place in October, November or early December of 2023, or January/February 2024. It will require a full weekend commitment (4 hours Friday night, 10 hours Saturday, 10 hours Sunday). WFA training is valid for 2 years.
